On Thursday, November 5, Cristiano Ronaldo announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 23-year journey with the Seleção Portuguesa.

The boy from Madeira who made his Portugal debut in 2003 leaves at 41 as the most-capped and highest-scoring player in men’s international football history.

234 matches. 146 goals. Three major trophies. One unforgettable No. 7.

The comparison covers Portugal’s senior men’s team before Ronaldo’s August 2003 debut and during his international career. The tournament figures count appearances in final tournaments, not total national-team matches.

The Boy Who Changed Portugal’s Football History

On August 20, 2003, an 18-year-old Ronaldo stepped onto the pitch against Kazakhstan. Nobody knew that the teenager would spend the next 23 years rewriting football history.

His first major international heartbreak came at Euro 2004, when Portugal lost the final to Greece on home soil.

Twelve years later, the story changed.

In 2016, Portugal defeated France 1–0 in Paris to claim its first major international trophy. Ronaldo, injured during the final, celebrated a triumph that had eluded generations of Portuguese stars.

He went on to captain Portugal to UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

Remarkably, 82 of Ronaldo’s international goals came in European Championship and World Cup qualifying campaigns alone.

Why Did Ronaldo Retire From Portugal?

The announcement followed a difficult period between Ronaldo and Portugal coach Jorge Jesus. Reports described a disagreement over his role in the national team, followed by Ronaldo’s departure from a September training camp.

His final Portugal appearance came on September 24, 2026, in a 1–0 Nations League victory over Wales.

Ronaldo announced that the time had come to pass the famous No. 7 shirt to the next generation, reflecting on 23 years of representing his country.

But this is not Ronaldo’s retirement from football. He will continue playing for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, with the remarkable milestone of 1,000 career goals still within reach.

Who Will Inherit Portugal’s No. 7?

Portugal now faces a question that goes beyond replacing goals.

Who replaces a footballer who represented his country across six World Cups, delivered its first European title and became a global symbol of Portuguese sporting ambition?

A new generation will carry the Seleção forward. But replacing Ronaldo’s influence, leadership and international recognition is another challenge entirely.

Portugal had legends before Cristiano Ronaldo. He leaves behind something those legends never achieved: a nation with three major international trophies.

The No. 7 shirt will have a new owner. The story behind it will always belong to Cristiano Ronaldo.
